Snifter

It started with two emerald boxes on a kitchen table in the States. Inside were our fluted Limoncello glasses, but tucked between the crystal were two plane tickets to Italy.

About Snifter

A brandy snifter is a quiet kind of gift – the kind that says "let's slow down and savour this." Whether you're shopping for Father's Day, a milestone anniversary, retirement, or anyone who collects bottles worth lingering over, a snifter turns a quick pour into a ritual. Glassique Cadeau snifters are hand-blown from lead-free crystal, weighted at the base, and shaped to cradle in the palm.

A snifter is a short-stemmed balloon glass with a wide bowl that narrows toward the rim. Use for brandy, cognac, Armagnac, XO and VSOP spirits, aged rum, port, barrel-aged whiskies. The wide bowl gives spirits room to breathe; the inward taper holds aroma where the nose meets the pour.

Brandy snifter vs cognac copita vs whiskey nosing glass – which to pick

  • Brandy snifter (15–22 oz, balloon bowl): wide for breath, narrow at the rim for aroma – the classic pour for Hennessy, Rémy Martin, and brandy served at room temperature.
  • Cognac copita / tulip (4–6 oz, tulip shape): focuses aroma toward the nose – the tasting-room glass for VSOP and XO Cognac, Armagnac, and aged Calvados.
  • Whiskey nosing glass (5–6 oz, tapered bulb): tightens the nose for single-malt Scotch, bourbon, and Japanese whisky tasted neat.

This collection covers the full snifter range. The Cognac & Armagnac Snifter Copitas are tulip-shaped for sipping French spirits. The Large Brandy Snifter Glasses are generous 21 oz balloons. The Long Stem Grappa Snifters are sized for Italian digestivos. The Brandy & Cognac Snifters bring everyday 15 oz proportions. The Stemless Brandy & Cognac Tasting Glasses for modern bar carts. Pair with our whiskey & rocks glasses for the full home-bar gift bundle.

A snifter glass – also called a brandy snifter or balloon glass – is a short-stemmed glass with a wide, rounded bowl that tapers inward toward the rim. The shape is designed for sipping spirits like brandy, cognac, Armagnac, aged rum, and port. The wide bowl gives the spirit room to open and concentrates aroma; the tapered rim holds the aroma where the nose meets the pour. The short stem and weighted base let you cradle the glass in your palm to warm the spirit. Glassique Cadeau snifters are hand-blown lead-free crystal, gift-ready in our signature box.

A brandy snifter is used for sipping brandy, cognac, Armagnac, XO and VSOP spirits, aged rum, fine whiskies, and port as a digestif. The shape – wide bowl, narrow rim, short stem – is purpose-built for slow, contemplative drinking. You cradle the bowl in your palm to gently warm the spirit, swirl it to release aroma, then bring the inward-tapering rim to your nose before sipping. Snifters are the right glass for after-dinner drinks, late-night reading, fireside pours, and any spirit worth lingering over.

A snifter has a wide, balloon-shaped bowl on a short stem – designed for cognac, brandy, and aged spirits with theatrical aroma. A Glencairn is a smaller, tulip-shaped tasting glass on a short pedestal base – designed specifically for whisky nosing and precision tasting. The snifter prioritises aroma display and palm-warming; the Glencairn prioritises concentrated nose evaluation. Use a snifter for relaxed after-dinner sipping. Use a Glencairn for serious whisky tasting flights and side-by-side comparisons. For everyday whisky drinking, either works – or reach for a lowball.

Brandy snifters range from 5 oz (small "copita" style) to 25 oz (large balloon). The right size depends on use. Tulip copitas (4–6 oz) are for cognac, Armagnac and grappa tasting. Medium snifters (8–12 oz) are the everyday standard for after-dinner brandy. Large balloons (15–25 oz) are for theatrical presentation and aerating particularly aromatic spirits. Glassique Cadeau snifters range from 3 oz long-stem grappa sippers to 21 oz balloon snifters. Match the glass to the spirit and the moment.

Cradle the bowl of the snifter in the palm of your hand, with the stem between your middle and ring fingers. Body heat gently warms the spirit, which releases aromatic compounds. Swirl slowly to aerate – then bring the inward-tapering rim to your nose before sipping. The whole ritual is intentionally slow: a snifter is designed for contemplation, not quick drinking. For tasting flights or precision evaluation, hold the snifter by the stem instead, to avoid warming the spirit.

Brandy and cognac are both served in snifters – they're effectively the same glass. Cognac is a specific type of brandy (from the Cognac region of France, made from a defined grape varietal and aged in oak), so a cognac glass is a brandy glass. Some traditionalists prefer a smaller tulip copita for fine cognac (XO, VSOP), arguing that the smaller bowl concentrates aroma more precisely. For everyday brandy or rougher styles, a larger balloon snifter is the standard.

Snifters are the traditional glass for brandy, cognac, Armagnac, aged rum, port served as a digestif, and barrel-aged whiskies that benefit from extra aeration. Some bartenders also use snifters for craft beer (especially Belgian ales, barleywines and imperial stouts) to release aroma. The shape works for any spirit that benefits from sitting and breathing – the wider the bowl, the more dramatic the aromatic effect. For neutral spirits or fast-drinking cocktails, a different glass shape works better.

Glassique Cadeau hand-blown lead-free crystal glasses are dishwasher safe on a gentle, low-temperature cycle – but hand washing is the safer long-term choice for keeping rims smooth and crystal clarity intact. Use warm water and a mild detergent, avoid extreme temperature changes (never put a frozen glass into a hot wash), and air-dry on a soft cloth. For sets with gold rims, painted detail, or hand-cut crystal – the Octagonal Gold-Rim Coupes and the Art Deco Speakeasy Lowballs in particular – hand wash only to preserve the finish.

Yes – lead-free crystal is the modern standard for premium glassware and is safe for everyday use with any beverage. Traditional lead crystal contained up to 32% lead oxide, which improved clarity and weight but could leach trace lead into spirits stored long-term in decanters. Lead-free crystal (sometimes called crystalline or potassium-zinc crystal) uses barium, zinc, or potassium oxides instead, delivering the same brilliance, weight, and ring without the safety concern. Every Glassique Cadeau glass is hand-blown from lead-free crystal and tested to comply with FDA and EU food-contact standards.

Yes – every Glassique Cadeau set ships in our signature gift box, ready to wow at unboxing. The box is structured, branded, and printed with the cocktail recipe for the glass inside (an Old Fashioned recipe with our lowballs, a French 75 with our coupes, a classic Martini with our martini glasses). No additional gift wrap needed. For weddings, housewarmings, engagements, anniversaries, and birthdays, every set is already presentation-ready straight out of the shipping carton.

Yes – Glassique Cadeau offers free standard shipping on every U.S. order over $89. Most sets ship the next business day from our warehouse, with delivery in 3-6 business days. Every shipment is packed with reinforced padding and tracked end-to-end, and any breakage in transit is replaced free of charge. Expedited shipping is available at checkout for time-sensitive gifts (weddings, milestone anniversaries, holiday deadlines).

Hand wash Glassique Cadeau crystal glasses in warm water with a mild detergent, then air-dry upside down on a soft cloth or stemware rack to prevent water spots. Avoid extreme temperature changes – never pour ice into a hot-from-the-dishwasher glass or hot liquid into a refrigerated one, since thermal shock can crack crystal. Store stemware upright (not on the rim) to protect the lip. For gold-rimmed, painted, or hand-cut sets, hand wash only. Lead-free crystal is durable, but it rewards gentle handling – every glass is hand-blown, so each one is unique.
